Training Workshop Series IV: Advanced Statistical Analysis in "R" with Forestry Related Data

On June 21 and 22, 2017, the "Training Workshop Series IV: Advanced Statistical Analysis in "R" with Forestry Related Data" was held at MoU signing research Institute of Forest Inventory and Planning Institute (FIPI), Vietnam. This workshop was co-sponsored and organized by Risk Analysis Research Center, ISM, and FIPI, Vietnam. The workshop was the fourth one held at FIPI, Vietnam. It was targeted exclusively at more experienced users. On the first day, the participants reviewed the materials and topics covered in previous workshops. This was followed by three researchers from FIPI, Vietnam who shared the problems they had worked on, and reported some of their preliminary statistical analysis on their study sites. The instructors provided them with some advice and suggested several approaches to tackle their problems. Given these analyses as examples, interactive lectures were provided. The participants applied nonlinear regression models to estimate the growth model for the data set collected and archived by FIPI. On the second day, in order to compare growth patterns among sample plots, the participants learned about both linear mixed effects models and nonlinear mixed effects models. This was the first attempt to give a problem-solving type-workshop using data set collected in Vietnam. In the end, everyone was very enthusiastic about attending the workshop and were excited looking forward to an event in the following year. The workshop ended successfully with a total of 17 participants. It was run mainly by Dr. Nguyen Hung Dinh from FIPI, Vietnam.
