Training Seminar on Applied Statistical Analysis with R for Forestry Studies 2013

The workshop on "Training Seminar on Applied Statistical Analysis with R for Forestry Studies 2013" was held in Pokhara, Nepal from July 24 to 26, 2013. This workshop was co-sponsored and organized by Risk Analysis Research Center, ISM and Institute of Forestry, Tribhuvan University. This workshop was aimed at building capacity for forest resource management in Cambodia and was designed to enable participants to use statistical software, "R", and to conduct a hands-on approach to dealing with various statistical analyses on data.

On the first day, the workshop kicked off with warm welcome remarks by the dean of the Institute of Forestry, Tribhuvan University and the director of the Regional Forest Office. After a brief lecture on statistical modeling on forest resource management, the participants installed the software on their own computers and learned about simple calculation using R, as well as the rules for declaring variables in R. At the end of the morning session on the first day, the participants worked on assigned exercise problems. During the afternoon session, the participants learned about creating a working folder, setting a working directory and data handling in R. On the second day, the participants learned about graphics in R and plotted the data prepared for the workshop, as well as create histograms. On the third day, the participants leaned about a single regression model and how to generate basic statistics. The participants then worked on some exercises. The workshop ended successfully with the completion ceremony, where each participant received a certificate of completion. There were a total of 58 participants including faculty members and graduate students of the Institute of Forestry, Tribhuvan University as well as officers from Regional Forest Office. They expressed interest in looking forward to an event in the following year.
