Workshop in Indonesia on October 7 and 9, 2025

Applied Statistical Analysis with “R” Software 2025

In cooperation with the Risk Analysis Research Center of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics, we organized the workshop “Applied Statistical Analysis with R Software 2025” at the Graduate School of Universitas Syiah Kuala in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, over two days on October 7 and 9, 2025. The purpose of the workshop was to provide participants with practical training in the full process of data analysis using the statistical software R. A similar workshop had also been held in Banda Aceh in FY2024, making this the second time the program has been offered. Because the International Conference on Agriculture and Bio-industry (ICAGRI) 2025 was held in parallel on October 8–9, the workshop schedule followed an irregular format this year (Yoshimoto delivered the keynote lecture on the first day of ICAGRI). Several participants from our FY2024 workshop also attended ICAGRI 2025, and we were able to exchange information regarding their subsequent research activities. In the workshop, participants worked with forest growth data, starting with data handling, learning the meaning of describing data characteristics using statistical measures and graphical methods, and then carrying out the procedures in R. Ultimately, they tackled linear regression and nonlinear regression, with particular emphasis on regression using growth functions. What was particularly striking was the participants’ strong commitment to producing graphics exactly as they envisioned. Many reported that being unable to create graphical outputs matching their expectations had been a major challenge in preparing research papers and presentations. They also showed great interest in how the difficulty of nonlinear regression varies depending on the functional form and number of parameters, repeatedly experimenting with various functions. The workshop was planned and organized mainly by Prof. Hizir Sofyan and his colleagues, and it was attended by 16 participants.
