Workshop in Laos, October 16 and 17, 2019
Applied Statistical Analysis with "R" Software for Forestry Studies 2019
On October 16 and 17, 2019, a workshop on "Applied Statistical Analysis with "R" Software for Forestry Studies 2019" was held at a Provincial Forest Service in Luang Prabang County, Laos. This workshop was co-sponsored and organized by Risk Analysis Research Center of ISM, and Faculty of Forestry, National University of Laos. This training workshop was aimed at developing human resources involved in the implementation of forest resources management in Laos. It was designed to enable participants to use statistical software "R" and to conduct a hands-on approach to dealing with various statistical analyses on data. On the first day, since most of the participants were first-time participants, a lecture on the application of statistical models in forest resource management was given to build up basic knowledge of all participants. The participants then learned about how to install R software, the basic commands for statistical analysis and data handling in R. During the afternoon session, the participants were divided into several groups to encourage participants to share their knowledge and ideas within a smaller group setting, so as to close the gap in proficiency among the participant. On the second day, the participants learned about regression models and estimated the parameters for a growth model for a given dataset. Everyone was very enthusiastic about attending the workshop and most participants expressed interest looking forward to an event in the following year. The workshop ended successfully with a total of 38 participants. The workshop was run mainly by Dr. Somvang Phimmavong from Faculty of Forestry, National University of Laos.
