Training Workshop Series V: Advanced Statistical Analysis in "R" for Forestry Related Data
On December 5 and 6, 2018, the "Training Workshop Series V: Advanced Statistical Analysis in "R" for Forestry Related Data" was held at MoU signing research Institute of Forest Inventory and Planning Institute (FIPI), Vietnam. This workshop was co-sponsored and organized by Risk Analysis Research Center, ISM, and FIPI, Vietnam. The workshop was the fifth one held at FIPI, Vietnam. Although it was targeted at more experienced users, several first-time participants also registered for this workshop. Therefore, in order to close the gap in proficiency among the participants, exercise problems covering the basics of R were given to each participant prior to the workshop. This action, not only allowed us to identify technical challenges and difficulties that the participants could encounter but stimulated discussions during the workshop. This workshop mainly focused on multivariate analysis and covered other topics including Generalized Linear Model (GLM), and both regression of continuous variables (such as linear regression and non-linear regression based on growth function) and regression of discrete variables (such as logistic regression, Poisson regression). Also, lectures on principal component analysis and cluster analysis were given in response to the request from the participants. However, there was not enough time left to cover all topics of these analyses. The rest of the uncovered topics as well as the theoretical background of these analyses were carried forward to the following workshop. It seemed that the participants became more familiar with R after attending a series of our workshops. The recent publication of “R” book in Vietnamese might also contributed to improving their understanding in statistical analysis using R. The workshop ended successfully with a total of 30 participants. It was run mainly by Dr. Nguyen Hung Dinh from FIPI, Vietnam.
