Workshop in Vietnam, March 19 to 21, 2015
Training on Applied Statistical Analysis with "R" for Forestry Studies
From March 19 to 21, 2015, the "Training on Applied Statistical Analysis with "R" for Forestry Studies" was held at the Forest Inventory and Planning Institute (FIPI) in Hanoi, Vietnam. This workshop was co-sponsored and organized by Risk Analysis Research Center, ISM, and FIPI, Vietnam. The workshop was aimed at developing human resources involved in the implementation of forest resources management in Vietnam. It was designed to enable participants to use statistical software "R" and to conduct a hands-on approach to dealing with various statistical analyses on data.
On the first day, the participants learned how to install the R software, and the basic commands for statistical analysis. Homework assignments were given to the participants at the end of the first day. Before the workshop started on the second day, the participants were able to discuss the solutions with each other in their own local language to review the topics covered on the first day. The participants then learned about data handling and graphics in R. On the last day of the workshop, the participants learned about how to estimate the parameters for growth models using various regression models. Everyone was very enthusiastic about attending the workshop and most expressed their interest looking forward to an event in the following year. The workshop successfully ended with a total of 14 participants. The workshop was run mainly by Dr. Nguyen Hung Dinh at FIPI.
