Workshop in Nepal, September 19 to 21, 2014
Training Seminar on Applied Statistical Analysis with R for Forestry Studies: Series II 2014
The "Training Seminar on Applied Statistical Analysis with R for Forestry Studies: Series II 2014" was held in Pokhara, Nepal from September 19 to 21, 2014. This workshop was co-sponsored and organized by Risk Analysis Research Center, ISM and the Institute of Forestry, Tribhuvan University. The aim of the workshop was to build capacity for forest resource management in Cambodia. It was designed to enable participants to use statistical software, "R", and to conduct a hands-on approach to dealing with various statistical analyses on data.
On the first day, the workshop kicked off with a warm welcome remarks by the vice dean of Institute of Forestry, Tribhuvan University. After a brief lecture on statistical modeling on forest resource management, the participants installed the software to their computers and then learned about simple calculation using R, the rules for declaring variables, simple calculation and data handling in R. At the end of the first day, exercise problems were assigned to the participants. At the beginning of morning session on the second day, one of the participants was asked to demonstrate and explain how to solve the exercise problems assigned on the first day, using his computer. The participants exchanged and shared their approach to the solutions and improved their understanding on data handling in R. The participants then learned about graphics in R, plotted the data prepared for the workshop and created histograms. On the third day, the participants leaned about a single regression model and how to generate basic statistics. They then worked on assigned exercise problems. The workshop ended successfully with the completion ceremony, where each participant received a certificate of completion.
