4. Indonesia Project
Exploring Optimal Mangrove Reforestation Activities
The researchers of our AgFReM member have collected and archived various data related to mangrove ecosystems in East Lampung, Sumatra, Indonesia. Based on the data collected, we develop a growth model for projecting the growth of mangrove forest considering the impact of harvest activities on the remaining trees as well as other related ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration and fishery resources. Also, we develop an optimization model which allows us to allocate management activities over space and time for given management goals and constraints. We combine these two models to develop an optimization system to explore the optimal spatial and temporal management allocation patterns for sustainable use of multiple functions of mangrove forest ecosystem. Our optimization system can quantify the tradeoff among multiple ecosystem functions and identify the optimal environmental and resource policy to achieve related SDGs.
