2023 Internship Seminar at ISM
On March 13 and 14, 2023, the “Online Seminar AgFReM Research Consortium, in partnership with the ISM Special Lecture on Statistics with R” was held as an onsite and online hybrid event. Face-to-face participants gathered at the Institute of Statistical Mathematics, while online participants used Zoom meeting platform. This workshop was sponsored and organized by AgFReM Research Consortium. There were a total of 15 participants from ten different countries (Cambodia, Canada, Czech Republic, Indonesia, Laos, Nepal, Portugal, and Vietnam) including five from Japan. The meeting featured both lectures by statisticians and research presentations by forest researchers. On the first day, Dr. Murakami (ISM) gave a lecture on spatial interpolation method based on geostatistical modeling using R. Dr. Surovy (Czech Univ. of Life Sci. Prague) gave a lecture on image analysis in R using forest fire as an example. This was then followed by Dr. Kamo (Sapporo Medical Univ.) who gave a lecture on forest growth classification method with R. There were also presentations from forest researchers from Indonesia, Laos, and Nepal. They shared their challenges and experiences in conducting research. On the second day, forest researchers in Vietnam, Cambodia, Portugal, Japan, Indonesia, and Canada, shared their views, challenges and experiences in conducting research. There were lively discussions among participants on the application of statistical modeling to practical forest management problems. Views and ideas were exchanged among participants and lecturers. All participants expressed interest looking forward to similar events in the future.
